Summary
This project stems from my love of 70s music that has grown since ive been little hearing about my father in his concert photography days. I was raised on a mix of 50s-80s music (as well as a little bluegrass thrown in there). This insipred me to create Disco!, not only as an exersize,
but also to play homage to the musical interests I have grown with.
Inspiration Board
When I think about the 70s I first think of discotheques, dance clubs, bright colors, funky theme songs, and dancing. I wanted to emulate this through this typeface, making it bold and fun with a retro feel to it.
Sketching
A lot of the more decorative typefaces of the time had a motif that would run through all of the letters. Whether this be extremely slim counterforms, bubbled serifs, or repeating lines as if the letters were radiating, the typefaces of the time were very obviously from the 70s. These fonts make a statement, so I included a running motif of a counterform line with a circle on the end in all of my letters. This is meant to connect all of the letters into an obvious type family so that the typeface is recognizable as “Disco!
