Kentucky on Highway 27 Photo Book

Summary

Kentucky on Highway 27 is a photo book that focuses on Kentucky’s relationship with this almost-forgotten highway.  Even as interstates became the biggest thing in the mid-century, rural Kentuckians still today thrive down Highway 27. Even as the barns decay and the back roads gets potholes, Highway 27 still goes through some of Kentucky’s most loved cities. This photo book was a labor of love, over days of driving and shooting, just to capture the back roads that I know Kentucky holds dearly.

Shooting Plans and Routes

I shot Highway 27 from Cincinnati all the way down to Somerset Kentucky, stopping my car at every photo opportunity I saw.
It took me around 15 hours in total over multiple days to get the thousands of photos I then sifted through to create the
Kentucky on Highway 27 photo essay.

Focal Photos

I consider my “focal photos” the images that help to tell the narrative more than others, they take the center stage. They provoke more visual interest and curiosity to the viewer.

Texture Photos

The photos I categorize as more “textural” are those that play a supporting role in telling the book’s narrative. They create a more subconcious emotion and nostalgia than the more focal photographs.

Spread Layouts Inspiration and Research

Before laying out the spreads of the book, I spent a lot of time in design libraries studying. I looked in to different types of photo books of all subject matters in order to find the style I ended up creating for my book.
